Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about carpooling with Scoop Commute.

What is Scoop Commute and how does the carpooling app work?

Scoop Commute is a commuter carpooling app that automatically matches co-workers and neighbors headed the same way into safe, reliable, door-to-door carpools. You simply download the app, set your commute schedule and route, and Scoop's intelligent matching algorithm pairs you with the ideal carpool partner. Morning and evening trips are scheduled separately, giving you full flexibility.

Is the Scoop carpooling app free to download?

Yes, the Scoop Commute app is free to download on both iOS and Android. There is no subscription cost — you are only charged for the rides you take as a Rider. If your employer offers an Enterprise carpool program with Scoop, you may enjoy even lower in-app pricing or fully subsidized rides.

How much money can I save by carpooling with Scoop?

Commuters can save up to $5,000 per year on commuting costs by carpooling with Scoop. Savings come from shared fuel costs, reduced vehicle wear and tear, and lower parking expenses. Drivers receive reimbursements from Riders to help cover gas and maintenance costs, while Riders pay a fraction of what they would spend driving alone.

Is carpooling with Scoop safe?

Safety is Scoop's top priority. All Drivers must pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check before offering rides. Before each carpool, you'll see profile photos and vehicle details of your matched commuter. GPS monitoring tracks trip direction and timing, and trip feedback is collected and reviewed for every commuter on every trip. Riders or Drivers who violate Community Guidelines may be removed from the platform.

Can I be both a Rider and a Driver on Scoop?

Yes. Scoop offers a Ride or Drive option that lets you switch roles based on your daily needs. You can be a Driver on Monday and a Rider on Tuesday — all from the same account. If you have the flexibility to match as either, you can indicate this directly on your scheduling request for better matching.

How do I schedule a carpool on the Scoop app?

Scheduling is quick and simple. Morning carpools must be scheduled by 9:00 PM the evening before, and afternoon/evening carpools must be scheduled by 2:00 PM on the same day. You can schedule carpools up to a week in advance. After the scheduling deadline, Scoop's algorithm matches you with a Driver or Rider going the same way, and you'll receive a notification with your carpool details.

What happens if my carpool is canceled or I don't get matched?

If your carpool is canceled or you aren't matched, you're automatically added to the carpool shortlist, where Drivers in your area can view your request and schedule a carpool with you. If your employer partners with Scoop for an Enterprise program, you may also receive a Lyft Pass as a backup commute option so you're never stranded.

How does Scoop's carpool matching algorithm work?

Scoop's intelligent matching algorithm considers your route, schedule, preferred departure time, and location to pair you with the most compatible carpool partner. The algorithm optimizes for efficient, traffic-predictive routes to minimize your commute time. Early scheduling is encouraged as it gives the algorithm more options for better matches.

Will carpooling with Scoop affect my auto insurance?

In most cases, no. Auto insurance policies typically allow not-for-profit, share-the-expense carpooling. Scoop is designed to help riders and drivers share commuting costs — not to allow drivers to earn a profit. Most policies have an exclusion for driving-for-hire that explicitly does not apply to shared-expense carpooling. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for confirmation.

What is Scoop's cancellation policy for carpools?

Each month, every carpooler receives one free cancellation waiver. However, this waiver cannot be applied to last-minute cancellations, which are defined as any cancellation within one hour of the first scheduled pickup. Consistent cancellations may affect your matching priority and standing on the platform.

How does Scoop pricing work for Riders and Drivers?

Riders cover a share of the commute cost with the Driver through the app. Driver reimbursement amounts typically range from $2 to $9 per passenger, per trip, based on factors like route distance and location. If you match with two Riders instead of one, the Driver payout increases. Pricing may be lower if your employer offers an Enterprise carpool program.

Are Driver reimbursements or Rider payments taxable?

Scoop does not provide tax forms such as a 1099 or W2 at the end of the year. The reimbursement amount Drivers receive is generally not considered reportable income by the IRS, as it covers shared commuting expenses. However, if you're part of an employer-sponsored Enterprise carpool program, any Rider discounts provided may be a taxable benefit. Consult your HR team or a tax professional for specifics.

What areas does Scoop Commute serve?

Scoop Commute operates in major metropolitan areas across the United States, connecting commuters with co-workers and neighbors headed to the same workplace or area. The app works best in regions with a high concentration of commuters traveling similar routes. Check the Scoop app for availability in your area.

How is Scoop different from Uber or Lyft rideshare?

Unlike on-demand rideshare services, Scoop is purpose-built for daily commuting. Scoop matches you with co-workers and neighbors — people in your trusted professional network — for recurring door-to-door carpools. It's significantly more affordable than rideshare because costs are shared between commuters, not marked up by a service fee. Scoop also offers employer-sponsored programs that can further reduce or eliminate your commute costs.

Can I use Scoop if I work non-traditional or shift-based hours?

Yes. Scoop allows you to schedule morning and evening carpools separately, giving you flexibility for varying schedules. If your employer offers Shift Scheduling through Scoop's Enterprise program, you can schedule round-trip carpools for each shift so you'll know your return trip details before your shift begins.

What environmental impact does carpooling with Scoop have?

Carpooling with Scoop has a meaningful environmental impact. Scoop commuters have collectively prevented over 2.5 million pounds of CO2 emissions and saved more than 3.5 million gallons of fuel. By sharing your commute with just one other person, you can cut your commute-related carbon footprint in half — contributing to cleaner air and less traffic congestion.
